Debbie Han has been examining in her various sculpture and photo series how human experiences are shaped and defined in contemporary culture. Her ongoing ceramic sculpture series, ‘Terms of Beauty,’ attempts to deconstruct the public perception of idealized western beauty so as to restore the characteristic inborn beauty of women living in the world. Han further exposes how a social conception such as beauty is influenced by a nation’s greater political, social, and cultural relations with others. The ‘Graces’ series deconstructs the practice of figurative sculpture and portrait photography through a subversive manipulation of perception and reality. The combined bodies of actual Korean women with western classical goddess heads depict gestures distinctive of Asian culture. Han’s most recent sculpture series, ‘Sport Venus,’ incorporates the Asian traditional lacquer technique with the western icon of beauty into creating the hybrid form that dissolves genres and cultures. These works reveal the artist’s consistent inquiry into the nature of culture and awareness in contemporary society.
