To my question about what made him start his work of burning incense, Lee, Gil-woo told me about his visual experience in past fall. A few years ago, while he was working in his studio in late fall, he casually looked up the sky and saw the leaves of ginkgoes that seemed to be burning with fire. This intensive visual experience brought him an idea of burning incense project. The collective beauty of leaves of ginkgoes was a magnificent spectacle and thus he decided to relate this splendor to burning incense.
The moment of burning a thin paper with incense is extremely intense. For he needs to concentrate himself and his eyes in a very short time in order to he can get what he intends in term of size and shape of the burnt paper. Chances always interfere in this working process. How much a paper will be burnt and which shape it will get can possibly be expected, but it is not absolute. He burns a thin paper with a burning incense having in his mind the resulted images. Thus, Lee, Gil-woo's work is a outcome of chance and plan. Since his work is not abstract but realistic, a plan plays an important role.
It is a performance that Lee, Gil-woo burn a paper with incense. As burning incense means purification in a ceremony, he carries out this with sincerity and patience. The more burnt papers, the more incense smell in his studio. This unique smell of incense purifies people's mind. In such atmosphere he burns a thin paper according to his drawing. All the images in his work, such as daily activities of human beings and their faces, are the outcome of this artistic self-discipline. The reason why I consider his working process as a "self-discipline" is that he repeats continuously such a simple act. This simple act of burning a thin paper with incense really reminds us of monks' ascetic exercises.
Lee, Gil-woo also parodies images of masterpieces of artists. For example, he overlaps a horsekeeper of Chosun dynasty with a clown of modern days in one of Kim, Do-ryang's works. And he inserts McDonald's clown in one of Chung, Sun's landscape paintings. In one of his large paintings, he presents Mr. Donald and his daughter in the context of "Kosainmuldo". This is a good example of parody by combining traditional contents with modern features.
He has worked on portraits by a repeated coloring technique. By modifying a film technique of overlap, he painted many international and Korean famous celebrities, such as Ahn, Joong-keun and a movie star Lee, Jun-ki, Marilyn Monroe and Andy Wahol, and so on. In these series of his work that have characteristics of Pop Art, he painted two different figures in two separate papers, and then pasted them together a bit out of line. Thus the image of two figures overlapped is quite confusing. By overlapping two figures in one image, he intentionally makes their unique features indistinctive. The contrast between warm colors and cold colors furthers its abstract aspect with overlays of colors and shades. Thus, he creates a unique images where the depth of colors and shades are well represented.
Even though Lee, Gil-woo's work is more like Pop Art in terms of subjects, he in fact reject Pop Art that somehow idolizes certain people. He obscures the distinctiveness of Pop Art by overlapping images a bit out of line and thus tries to recover the aura of artwork. Through patiently burning a thin paper with incense, Lee, Gil-woo aims for absolute and perfect union of mind and body.
