In 2004, Youngmi Shin was first stepped into the art world with her solo show <Ah!…Mr. Narcissus> at art space Hue in Seoul. She once again earned a chance to show her body of works at a solo exhibition < Hidden Dreams> in Seoul by wining a public contest held by BrainFactory, which was very exceptional case for a graduate student at that time. <Hidden Dreams> was an opportunity for Shin to introduce her works to a lot of people. Now, the third solo exhibition of Youngmi Shin <Blooming Soul, Blooming Spirit> is to be held at Gallery Sun Contemporary starting from May 8th, 2008 to May 25th, 2008. In previous shows <Ah!...Mr. Narcissus> and <Hidden Dreams>, Youngmi Shin dealt with the subject of her identity, and personal stories of her growth as a female and as an independent person. In this upcoming third solo exhibition of Shin, the artist shows her growth and changes in the past four years after her past two solo shows in 2004. Her first show <Ah!...Mr. Narcissus> was concentrated on looking back at herself with self portraits that are associated with Narcissus mythology. In her second solo show < Hidden Dreams>, her dream, hope and desire which were embedded deeply in her mind became the main theme. Youngmi Shin shows herself slowly blooming after her past search of herself both in and out in this upcoming third exhibition <Blooming Soul, Blooming Spirit>.
The keyword of the works – self-portrait The subject of self-portraits was continuously dealt with since the history of art was started. ‘Self-portrait’ is the keyword in Youngmi Shin’s work also. Youngmi Shin’s face is easily recognizable at a stroke to the public, who is familiar with her works, even though one has never got a chance to see the artist in person. The characters in her works are that much like the artist Shin herself. Thus far is similarity between Youngmi Shin’s work and most other ordinary self-portraits.
Self-portrait that has a story However, the insertion of narrative in repetitive Shin’s self-portraits is what differentiates Youngmi Shin’s work from existing ‘drawing oneself.’ Not only Shin stays in painting herself changing facial expressions and gestures according to her diverse emotions in different situations, but also the artist tells her story by putting configured images of her repeatedly in her works. In addition to that numerous objects, animals are surrounding her image in various backgrounds in her painting, which distinguishes her work from others’. Although all the elements that appear with Shin’s self painted image certainly exist in reality, Youngmi Shin’s particular use of pastel colors and emphasis on planes create unrealistic atmosphere, which make viewers feel like reading a fairy tale or dreaming.
The story that is created by frequent appearances of images 1. Images of animals Very often times, Youngmi Shin paints images of animals in her works. The frequently appearing animals are not ordinary animals such as dogs and cats, but they are sheep, owls, and ducks. And this unique feature makes people wonder why those animals were chosen of all animals. At this point, the picked out to be painted animals have special karma with the artist rather than selected randomly. The sheep represents the dreamlike memory that she has from the time when Shin woke up from a nap surrounded by a flock of sheep while she was traveling through some desert in India with her best friend. Also, the owl is a strong projection of the artist herself. When Youngmi Shin saw a friend of hers picture of the owl, she felt a strong connection to even visit the zoo in person and identified the look of owl with herself. Sometimes, sheep, owls and ducks take roles of pets on the canvas– a woman sleeping next to a sheep in one bed, treating the sheep like a dog (self-portrait 3, 2003), and tying an owl with a leash like walking a dog and cat (My pet, 2004) – It is read as both Youngmi Shin is looking back at her own reflection and others gazing at her. Thus, the images of animals become friends of the artist, the objects that Shin is looking at, and other looks of herself. Since the appearances of odd animals that we cannot easily see in modern society bring in distinctively unrealistic ambience to Shin’s work, the dreamlike atmosphere of the paintings puts her work on the borderland between actuality and dream.
2. Images of trees and water In Youngmi Shin’s second solo exhibition <Hidden Dreams>, the images of people with trees were mainly dealt with. Unlike the people at leisure in romanticized forest with green trees in leaf, the trees’ roots and the person’s hair are lashing down the egos of Youngmi Shin. The owl attempts to flap away, but fails because of its feet are tied to the long hair (<Hidden Dreams>, 2004). Like this, the exhibition <Hidden Dreams> was about the story of the immanent wishes and latency of desire that were unresolved. Even though this upcoming third exhibition <Blooming Soul, Blooming Spirit> has images of trees and forest that we have seen before in previous show, there are apparent differences. First of all, the forest is painted with splendid colors that make the work pleasant, which is very much unlike to <Hidden Dreams>. In addition to that, the characters of Youngmi Shin seem to be enjoying themselves by sitting on tall trees placed in the middle of the lake and soaking in the water. It is assumed that they are the gestures of newly found freedom of tightly bound things in the past. Other noticeable aspect is the changes in facial expressions of people in the painting, while the image of a lake shown in <The pond>, 2007 is repeatedly appears in this third show. The characters come out as enjoying the situation they are in currently, other than observing and feeling insecure like they were before.
Blooming Soul, Blooming Spirit The cactuses, with many spines tied onto the roots of a tree which seemed to be full of dissatisfaction, are replaced with the flower petals being blown away. The women are now sitting in a circle, holding each others’ hands, instead of them staring at different directions and having conversations in undertone. It seems they are blooming in joy after reconciliation between themselves. According to the artist, the sketches of the new works in this upcoming solo show in 2008 were already done 2-3 years ago. However, she also says that the moment to start the painting has to come, even though the sketches had been finished. This artist Youngmi Shin calls her works as her ‘babies.’ Just like a pregnant mother is waiting for the birth of her baby, Shin pulls out each story that she has been keeping in her mind when the due date comes. Interestingly enough, there is an image of a pregnant woman among Shin’s works in this new exhibition that fills the viewers with curiosity. And also, the character is a full grown woman who is pregnant but at the same time, she is wearing lingerie with high heels, looking like a little girl trying very hard to imitate the look of her mother. I cannot wait to see what the next story is, and when the story comes out as a work of art.
