CHOI Youngwook (1964~)
Young Wook Choi presents the moon-jar as not only the subject itself, but also the representation of homage to the inherent Korean aesthetic. It is meant to reminisce the past. The vases from Chosun dynasty in Korea are differentiated from those of other countries, in terms of organic, simple, and warm-hearted characters. Choi’s moon-jar paintings transform the distinctive forms and colors of the moon-jar vases in a very delicate way. Choi is inspired by such observation, creating a unique style moon jar by reproducing the appearance of a moon jar, while carefully studying the basic formal elements such as color and line. The most noticeable element in his work is ‘hairline-like cracks’ which are important symbols and clues to comprehend the inner soul of the paintings. The title of the painting, ‘Karma’ or ‘Yeon’ in Korean (the principle regarding the creation and extinction of all things in the universe) implies. Each crack represents the relationship between individual and whole. Looking at the cracks on the moon jar’s surface, the lines are similar yet different, separated yet connected, and appear to become a whole. Such characteristics represent a force embracing a life’s ordeals and sorrows, and joy and despair. Painting the delicate cracks is a metaphorical practice of life: Choi not only reflects his life memories but also withholds the stories of ordinary people’s lives. In his works, the artist merges and transfers his personal stories to our stories. We relate to his narrative and the nostalgic life sentiments that follow the shapes, colors and cracks of the work.
