KIM Jin (1974~)
Korean-born artist Jim Kim has visually described the relation of oneself and its surrounding space based on his experience as a stranger in a new environment of London. Anxiety, expectation people generally have when they start over a new life in a new place, and experience as a stranger in an unfamiliar environment make us to consider the relationship between one’s own identity and his/her surroundings. Besides, trapping between two desires- to belong to the new world, or to escape from it- those uncomfortable feelings allow us to take some time to look into ourselves. Korean- born artist Jin Kim was a foreigner himself while his stay in London and reflects vivid memories of being a stranger on his canvas with his unique techniques coming from his artistic sensitivity and formative ideas. In his latest works, Kim continued to include his trademarks- a self-portrait figure and English style room- but further tries to expand his artistic world by introducing a new space created by the 4th window. His rich palette, distinctive brush strokes and the figurative structures have been recognized by many collectors and art people. Jin Kim received his BFA and MFA degree at Chung-Ang Univeristy and studied Fine Arts at Chelsea College of Art and Design. Since Kim’s stay in London, his works drew attentions from galleries overseas and received superb reviews for his solo exhibition at Stables Gallery in London and Miki Wick Kim Contemporary Gallery in Zurich. In 2009, he had an invited solo exhibition at IMYU Projects in London. Domestically he was awarded many prestigious prizes including 19th and 21st Grand Art Exhibitions of Korea, 23rd and 24th Joongang Fine Arts Prize and 32nd Fine Arts Association and in 2010, Kim was selected as Young Artist 10 from SOAF for 2011. He has been actively engaging in international art market such as Bridge Art Miami (2007), Bridge Art New York (2008) and KIAF (2010).
