CHOI Arum (1983~)
Gallery Sun Contemporary is pleased to present a Hyper-realistic painting by Choi A Rum in Art Dubai 2010. Using cats as a main subject matter and focusing on their gazing eyes, Choi tells us about the hidden truth underneath our everyday life. Choi believes that animals do not manipulate emotions unlike human beings with the ability to adjust and hide feelings. She regards cats as an allegory for veracity and purity, whereas ancient people regarded them as a symbol of distrust due to countless superstitions. She tries to capture the moment of speechless cat’s honest gaze, rather than a simply well drawn portrait of cat, which seems to be allegorical expression of innocent eyes implying individual’s wish to communicate truthfully in a desolate society as well as an offspring of instinctive desire for pursuing true value of interaction. CHOI A Rum was born in 1983 in Seoul, Korea and received BFA and MFA from Sookmyung Women’s University in Seoul. She had her first solo exhibition in 2009 in Seoul and has participated in 14 group exhibitions including Asia Student & Young Artist Art Festival. |
