Unrealistic space_BS6, Fabric, Oil on canvas, 27.3 x 27.3cm, 2018
YOO Hwasu  (1989~)

Artist Yoo Hwasu’s works were conceived from her desire to escape
from her complexities, negative thoughts, insecurities, and vacant
mind to somewhere she can settle down and feel safe.
The artist transitions from the reality to an unrealistic world through
the act of “painting a picture.” She creates a new world by breaking
away from the various parts composing her life such as repetitive life,
habitual behaviors, and unreasonable situations.
Her work is a representation of an imaginary world dreaming of a
Utopia – a non-existent world filled with narcissistic fantasy. Her act of
overlaying ‘painting’ and ‘objects (fabrics)’ is her expression of the
subjective mind, fiction, and illusions which become the core of
creating her virtual world. The images and materials reflecting her
personal experiences and the realities have been subjectively
interpreted and modified on the canvas to portray an unrealistic
imaginary world.
The flowers, words and children within her works are tools to signify
the Utopia she envisions. The young boys and girls travelling in search
of amusement and pleasure are disguises of people exhausted from
the numerous schemes and perceptions forced upon in reality. The
wild flowers and plants although beautiful appear artificial and lifeless.
In other words, everything depicted inside the artist’s works are mere
shells of objects, devoid of meaning and life.
