SUNG Youngrok (1980~)
Sung Young-Rok's artworks first attract people's attention with splendid colors, however, the mood and color tone of his images present mysterious sorrow so that it conveys a lingering sense. He has steadily built his own area of artworks based on lyrical, colorful tone through four consecutive solo exhibitions. The artist, who majored in oriental painting, has tried to prove the Korean painting's identity in many ways and studied for many years in order to creative a new sensation in Korean painting. The Korean painting's identity that he pursues is presenting his thought with his own style. Paper, dyestuffs and the art of drawing are based on traditional method but what he wants to draw on the canvas is our life. The most attractive aspect of his works is that he embodies unique scene utilizing contemporary life as the traditional subject of oriental painting. This exhibition features apricot flowers. These are one of the traditional materials of oriental painting and many literary artists in history have studied its figure and main features. In the oriental society, apricot tree flowers stand for constancy, therefore it has been regarded as a symbol of grace and elegance. On the other hand, apricot tree flowers in his artwork provides emotional and pathetic feelings at the same time. Most of them are in bloom near the river and they look like vulnerable little flowers in the background of river colored with blue or red. The color of apricot tree flowers blooming by the dazzling blue riverside is white or gold. It seems that apricot tree flowers are pretty pathetic rather than undaunted because of the dazzling blue river even though a couple of trees are firmly nearby. The red river glows with the splendor of the setting sun and the dark stream coming from under the surface of the water stands for the fact that it is getting dark soon. It was observed by the artist standing at a point from dawn till dusk. He took a note of the starting and ending a day as much detail as he could. The blue river rising white wave from afar at dawn or gold dust, spreading like snowing on the canvas which stands for climax at noon, presents the artist's attitude in life. Sometimes rain quietly falls on the river and apricot flowers. It is drizzling. Weak and silent. It looks like it tells you about your life in a low voice rather than make a big speech. You can see also raining scene in his artwork named <Petals float down the stream>. Full blossom is in the rain. Flowers near the river fall down when the wind rises, they fade away. The river colored with the flames of sunset gets more inconvenienced by not having colorful blossoms. The artist's artwork has its essential standards. Here are them. There is an apricot tree flower within the near-distance, the river within the middle-distance and mountains within the far-distance. The far away mountains seem another world where you have to get across the river to go there. Apricot flower might be himself. The river means the aspect of the world and the far away mountains would be the artist's utopia that is the object of his yearning. The flower is caught in the rain, from time to time decorated it with gold dust and it falls down between waterways, but lets you feel strong yearnings toward silent world where you have to get across far way. The reason why Sung Young-Rok's artwork represents both splendidness and mysterious sorrow is that apricot flowers having a time-limited life are giving out time-unlimited fragrance with fortitude. The gallery visitors look back on their life from his works. It is possible for stream to be completed for by painting over the transparent colors with an every single layer. It is intended to contribute to the contemporary oriental painting. Sung Young-Rok's artwork creates contemporary oriental painting with his sensibility, and therefore apricot flower showing integrity in his picture has been reborn as apricot flower showing sadness, however, we can read the point of view on his work he pursues from the sadness. We look forward to seeing how Sung Young-Rok's work have created new tone with unique sensibility like a apricot tree standing alone by side of time-limited life and what he will contribute to the future of the contemporary fine art, keeping his identity .
