Jiyeon SONG (1981~)
Jiyeon SONG is in a place slightly different from her contemporary artists. She is not only interested in the stories, but she has a tremendous interest in the painterly texture. The artist strongly reveals the object changing in time through thick matieres by piling up paints repetitivey at a state where one cannot weigh the definite result, free from the stereoype of "painting". Matiere does not merely mean the simple material or the matter. At least to the artist, it is a more delicate concept, and it is many stories that show the nature of time where paints change, the time of life, and, at the same time, the trace of the past. Therefore, time in her work is multiple and, at the same time, singular. She said that there was a time when the paints, which had been piled up like tempers, had actually betrayed her. It is because anatomical conditions of fine art such as proportion, balance, color, etc had overwhelmed her. The artist had resolved such physical conditions with philosophical and sensuous distancing on the object. Therefore, her paintings seen from up close is glamorous, flickering and intense due to the rough matieres scraped and reapplied, but if you step back and look at them, the brick-like solid colors materialize space, and we can hear the sound of quiet and deep silence. Song's work always demands 're-looking'. We have to look close and look from afar. This is because her work ultimately possesses the free directivity which painting has. Such work of the artist recognizes and embodies reality in various methods and presents us a fresh methodology searching for new reality of our time. From that aspect, I believe that the artist Jiyeon is a born storyteller, creating and producing her own time and space in a new way.
