LEE Gilwoo  (1967~)

Artist Lee Gil-Woo’s method and medium of using burning incense on paper and overlapping them to bring out new images has been an important element in understanding the artist and his works. By combining two images irrelevant to each other, Lee has created a whole new scene where extreme elements that respectively belong to secular worlds like the East and the West, the ancient and contemporary, the famous and unanimous, the metaphysical and the tangible come together, conflicts and constantly evolve around each other. In this exhibition, the artist has once again incorporates two different types of concept, specifically regarding the theme of healing. The theme was selected upon a very personal experience as in most cases in contemporary art. Witnessing physical and mental ill of his parents, the artist delved into the theme of heal and of life, which is generally an inevitable issue for all of us. The new array of works by Lee bears his witness to the issue and of his investigation into what sort of approach and action he was able to offer us. The ritualistic exercise of burning holes with incense is a labor intensive method of production, which is an intentional performance of the artist, wishing for his parents to heal as well as for the audience to grasp moments of rest and peace found in the calm landscapes of the country, the face of Buddha and even the pill jars. The meditative and self-oriented aspects of the Lee’s works are relevant to the spirit of Zen and the calm aura that binds them provides peace of mind and an opportunity for audience to merge into the world of Lee Gil-woo.
Lee Gil-woo graduated both B.F.A. and M.F.A. in Korean Painting at Joongang Univeristy and his solo shows were held in Seoul, Beijing, Shanghai, London and more. The successful solo exhibition in 2005 at Yeonghwang Gallery Beijing was followed by solo show at Gallery Moon, Beijing and White Box Gallery New York. The series of exhibitions were well received by the critics and the respective art scenes. Selected by the Korean Eye Foundation and Satchi, Lee was invited to show at Satchi Gallery in London this year. His work ‘Irrelevant Answer’ won the Grand Prize at the 14th Bangladesh Biennale in 2010.
