CHEONG Kwangho  (1959~)

The sculpture of Cheong Kwang-Ho differs from the starting point.
Deeply rooted at the base of Western sculpture is "the fear for empty
spaces(horror vacui)", which brought about the idea that human
creations must have "bulk(volume)". It is the concept of "truth"
against "untruth". In the 20th century, Henry Moore's Sculpture with
a Hole astounded people because it literally poked a windhole in its
"volume". Nevertheless, Moore's method to emphasize "untruth"
could have conversely reinforced the idea of "truth". It is a matter of
course that modern sculpture of korea developed by studying Western
sculpture.
In contrast, Cheong Kwang-Ho started to create from as non-sculpture.
He sought motifs of his own idea, in his daily life and society. Characters
and Leaf were chosen in this way. But that is not enough. The
importance is in how to express the characters and the leaf. Needless
to say, that artist had in fact already sought out the method of
expression when he chose the motifs: forming the Chinese characters
with brass rods, and tracing the shape of the leaf ― its outline and
veins ― with copper wires.
Chinese characters, though originally a hieroglyph, were established
by erasing the substance of the original form, in other words, by
abstraction. Therefore, each stroke of Chinese character is an untruth.
Therefore, Cheong Kwang-Ho does not simply write Chinese characters
with brass, but what he does is none other than to trace "untruth"
with "truth". The same applies to the leaf motif, in which the framework
alone, with almost all of the substance of the leaf eliminated
represents something in the shape of a leaf but not the leaf itself.
Hence, in the context of Western sculpture, a reversal occurs here.
However, the artist probably intended a departure more than a
reversal, from what had been "sculpture" in both East and West, that
is, the creation of form(or volume) by carving and chiseling and
assembling.
