KANG Yujin (1977~)
Yujin Kang has been reproducing modern cityscapes on canvas but by employing the two dimensional characteristic of the canvas and that of illusional, three dimensional perspective while adopting a rather unconventional material like enamel onto canvas, has established an aesthetic scope of her own. The artist paints the cityscape with a exaggerated perspective to the extent that the buildings look distorted and in the later course of painting, drips paint onto the canvas to stress the fact that the whole process is done on a two dimensional canvas where perspective is only an illusion. Also by juxtaposing the cool, solid dolor fields and expressionist dripping method, amplifies the energy on canvas. The artist often uses multiple perspectives and dissected and overlapping images but only to the point where figure is still visible and legible. This is because the purpose of her work does not lie in creating whole new images but communicating the impression upon specific urban spectacles as objectively as possible. Yujin Kang graduated both bachelors and masters from Seoul National University in painting and studied at Goldsmith and Chelsea, London, Winning the second prize at the 4th Sejong Arts Awards in 2001, was nominated as on of the finalists at Nokia Asia Pacific Art Awards in the same year. In 2006 the artist won recognition from both domestic and international art scenes as she became one of the finalists of London Celeste Art Prize. Since then, Kang has actively participated in residence programs an Korea and overseas. Acclaimed for original style of painting, demand for Kang’s works run high from galleries in major cities of the world such as Bangkok, Paris, London and Berlin. 2001 B.F.A.
