SHIN Youngmi
Shin Young-mi – an artist who liberates her stories in the appropriate time – offers a new perspective on self-portraits. Self-portraiture is a genre which prevailed during the Renaissance as artists started to form a sense of identity and moreover is a practice that represents one’s identity and desire. Shin too, through self-portrait embodies the crisis of self-identity, dream and hope, desire and so forth. However by incorporating a narrative and with repetitive emergence of the self and the figure, she composes a ‘self-portrait with a story’ in her work. Shin’s unique pastel colors, composition that emphasize the flatness and the smooth surface leave a dreamlike and all together a pop-art impression. Shin illustrates her narrative with repetitive representation of herself and by presenting numerous figures simultaneously. During Shin’s 2004 solo-exhibition – ‘Hidden Dreams’ – she attempted to depict the underlying dream and desire through the portrayal of figure tied down in the woods; in the paintings shown in 2008 ‘Blooming Soul, Blooming Spirit’ exhibition, number of portraits are presented against overhanging trees or enjoying by the waterside – the harmonized composition and liberated gestures of the figures demonstrate a change from the previous works, as though Shin has reconciled with herself. The animals that appear in Shin’s work, in particularly, sheep, owl and duck are ones that possess a special relationship with the artist; Shin states that she experienced epiphany when she encountered them in reality. The animals appear: as pets; as a different form of herself with her identity projected; and lastly as someone else’s point of view on the artist. In this way, Shin unravels the stories of herself by disclosing her perspective on her own identity and through the desire and other’s gaze into her. Shin Young-mi graduated both bachelors and masters from Kookmin University in painting and has gained recognition from numerous local galleries after being selected as Brain Factory’s artist of 2004, in the year of 2003. In 2006 and 2007, she was chosen for the artist-residency program at the Nanji art studio of Seoul Museum of Art and Goyang art studio of National Museum of Contemporary art, respectively. Shin continues to attract many collectors attention through her participation in the most prominent art fair – Scope Basel – in 2008. Education 2002. B.F.A. in Fine Arts, Kookmin University .
