Vio CHOE (1971~)

In general, artists plan what would draw and how to express before working on drawing. It is an act expressed inner desires and impulses of the artist in the realm of consciousness. However, Vio Choe works in a completely opposite way which is instinctive and unconscious, in the areas of unintended, unplanned. He fills up the screen with lines and symbols only depending on the spontaneous emotions like Jean Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, who dominated American Art in the 1980s, expressing their inner world with graffiti and drawing in the combination of signs and patterns.
Human consciousness is delivered to brain via eyes. But the visual sense distorts things which mean we don’t see things for what they really are and the fundamental energy and vitality hidden in things are invisible. Therefore, Vio Choe intends to convey things through the unseen energy transcended time and space, found in unconsciousness, not by visually. Though we are unable to visualize youth memories in a specific way, the factors like the sense of smell, sound were already permeated into our body. It works the same way. He tries to put his immediate energy and vitality which comes out depending on his feeling into the screen drawing lines with color tubes instead of brushes as he supposes the use of brush itself is intended, technical, second handed. In that sense, his work is totally unpredictable how it comes out.
He considers the most important energy in human life is ‘love.’ He’s working on depicting the ‘love’ energy we need in modern society that requires being more excellent, makes people classified based on rank. He wants viewers to get the healing energy emitted from his work and the hurts they have to be cured. This exhibition presents diverse works that are colorfully and complexly composited. Each work has the energy of love to be radiated that will be the opportunity for viewers to fully share the artist’s intension.
