KIM Dujin (1973~)
During his late 20s, Kim Du Jin who studied western painting in college, exhibited various forms of work. The artist had been researching heavily in painting, sculpture, photography, and video to gain an extensive study on visual. Even while undergoing the long conventional transition period, Kim Du Jin has been constantly focusing on the theme of his identity. Kim Du Jin takes the skin off from the figures of Europe’s masterpieces and embodies the skeleton of those figures in 3D graphic. These figures from the masterpieces become the perfect components for the artist who constantly studies the relationships between physique and identity, mind and body, and the numerous social implications derived from those relationships. They are portrayed with exaggerated gestures and facial expressions to heighten the dramatic element, but still based on normal human forms and emotions. Even mythology is developed to become more enticing by adding flesh to the common stories of a human life– life, death, love, and conflict. In other words, myths can be referred to as an integration of the social norms reflecting human existence and their relations. Kim Du Jin begins his work by eliminating the social conventions implied in the masterpieces. After removing outer layer, the figures lose not only skin, but also identity. There stand skeletons before a crowd in a fundamental form without the external factors, such as sex, race, appearance, or rank. Despite an attempt to determine the figures with the given clues-a pose, behavior, or movement of the body- one barely finds out who they are. Through his works, the artist is resesting against the ubiquitous distinctions and biases occurring from visible elements through his works. Education 2004 M.F.A.
