Iba Yasuko (1967~)
Gallery SUN contemporary, which has been presenting several exhibitions introducing Japanese contemporary art, is pleased to announce a solo exhibition by prominent Japanese artist, Iba Yasuko. Having completed the postgraduate course at Saga Art College, Iba Yasuko was awarded VOCA [The Vision of Contemporary Art'98] from The Ueno Royal Museum which made her gain wide recognition. Attended three month training in Monflanquin, France by scholarship of Daimler Chrysler Group in Japan Art Scope '99 as well as stayed in New York for one year supported by Japanese Government Overseas Study Program for Artists, she has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions including ‘Tsubaki kai’ held in Shiseido Gallery and ‘The Elegance of Silence’ at Mori Museum. She has taken part in art fairs abroad and been renowned as the best-selling living artist, working mainly in Osaka, Kyoto and Tokyo. Her works were shown at KIAF 2006 for the first time in Korea and she was invited by International Incheon women Artists’ Biennale 2007. For this exhibition, the first solo show in Korea, recent works are presented with silkscreen prints produced in 2004. Iba’s canvas is filled with exquisitely close-cropped cuts of everyday objects. She transmits bed linen, a part of sofa, the edge of the cushion, a pure ceramic, pudding topped with honey that are often photographed by her to the canvas. Filling up the canvas with enlarged part of fruit that turns to something new keeping its freshness and moistness, clothes patterns and the edges of cushion, Iba doesn’t concern with depicting the realistic image, but the phenomenon generated by the light merged into colour of material. She carefully observes the texture on the surface projected by light and explores the pixels and elements that consist of it. Then she draws them in her imagination with photographer’s eyes, making them alive. The use of the mineral pigment which is traditional technique, dabbing paint lightly let the hazy light alive. Iba brings out something purified from the métier of the object which absorbed the refracted light and stimulates the sense of touch creating an independent being renewed from the photographic image. The object on a canvas is not the photographic image anymore, but a new being named ‘untitled’ breathing and creating exquisite atmosphere.
