Debbie HAN (1969~)
Korean-American artist Debbie Han investigates in her works the issues of how human experiences are shaped and defined in contemporary culture. In her recent sculpture and photo series, she questions the accepted cultural practice of the idealization of feminine body by subversively altering its form and cultural context. Since 2004, Han has been pursuing ceramic sculpture series titled ‘Terms of Beauty,’ for which she sculpts the face of Venus in the multitude of racial and ethnic characteristics. Her reconstructed Venuses are made in the ancient Korean ceramic technique of celadon. Her photo series, ‘Graces’ and ‘An Everyday Venus’ capture bodies of actual Asian women, which are combined with prototypical Western classical heads with digitally altered skin to marble-like smoothness. These metaphorical, hybrid figures simultaneously embody such contradictions as the ideal and actual, past and present, and the occidental and oriental.. These allegorical figures metaphorically reflect the current cultural trends and realities. . Debbie Han’s works have been shown internationally, with solo shows in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seoul, and Valencia, Spain. She has had over 40 group exhibitions in Asia, USA and Europe. Han also has received numerous fellowships and residency awards in USA and Asia. Her most recent award includes 2007 Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant. She is currently working at ARCUS Project international artist residency in Japan.
