CHAE Eunmi (1967~)
Chae, Eun-Mi, who was deeply attracted to a pure gold leaf when she was studying in Japan, has been continuously searching for a simple, elegant and modern artistic style with traditional painting materials and her unique technique. Her works reached today's standard through many trials, she sticks gilded cubes using a natural lacquer that gives her work a dazzling shine. Then she paints gilded cubes with five Korean traditional colors(yellow, blue, white, red, and black) which symbolizes the universe, and intermediary colors(that come between the colors mentioned above) symbolizing fundamental forms of nature. In doing so, she introduces this whole new technique, so called 'Gold Color-Field Painting'. One special aspect of this exhibition is that she used mother-of-pearl, a traditional material, in a very different context. The delicate light of mother-of-pearl shifts her work to a more mature state. Experiencing the effects of color plates gives me an enormous excitement. Each form influences each other, keeping a harmonious relationship, and we can see the process of change, their coexistence, and interactions. All the different lights, made by a pure gold leaf as well as color plates, get bumped into each other at some point and they never invade into each other's areas but get connected and together shine through. A dazzling variation of different lights attain even more depth through this course. Her technique, 'Gold Color-Field Painting' does not only make us 'see' but 'feel' things as well. The colors, both strong and deep, attract our sights with their richness and energetic force, and therefore draw us into the space of color plates. After all, we are now ready to enjoy broad and wide aspects of her forms. Also, it is impossible to miss out her brilliant use of space. Although imprisoned by the cubes, those color plates keep their own open structure and gives a feeling of movement by repeating the process of pushing and pulling. As forms look very differently depending on where you see the piece, reflected shapes and shadows also appear different. The beauty of blank space we can see in the cubes, has both 'infinity' of emptying and 'fulfillment' of being emptied. Also, it is a philosophical space that makes us experience the artist's breath and feel her thoughts. Various lights and particles of colors remove all the boundaries and circulate the overflowing energy. If we look at Chae, Eun-Mi's works with more sincere eyes, we will be able to read hidden messages that we usually fail to notice. -Ku, Jin-Kyung, Art Theory Education 2004 Lecturer at a Graudate School Design, Dankook University 2000 Visiting Professor to ToKyo National University of Fine Arts and Music 1997~2002 Instructor at College of Education of Dankook University. 1997 Oil Painting at a Graduate School of ToKyo National University of Fine Arts and 1994 Researcher at a Graduate School of ToKyo National University of Fine Arts and Music/M.F.A 1993 Education of Fine Arts at a Graduate School of Dankook Univ./M.F.A 1990 Department of Painting Fine Arts Dankook University/B.F.A Selected Solo Exhibitions 2006 Solo Exhibition (Gallery SUN Contemporary, Seoul) Solo Exhibition (Lotte AVENUEL Gallery,Seoul) 2005 Solo Exhibition (Seoul Arts Center, Seoul) 2004 Solo Exhibition (Kumho Museum, Seoul) Solo Exhibition (Asiana First Launge,Incheon Internationai Airport) 2003 Exhibition for opening memorial festival(Star Tower Gallery, Seoul) 2002 Solo Exhibition (Kumho Museum, Seoul) 2001 Solo Exhibition (Sejong Center for the Performing Arts, Art Museum, Seoul) 2000 Solo Exhibi tion: My Home with Picture(Seorim Hwarang Hosted, cherevill Expo Center) 1988 Solo Exhibition (Dukwon Gallery, Seoul) 1998 Solo Exhibition (Surugadae Gallery, Tokyo Ginza) 1996 Solo Exhibition (Gallery-17, Tokyo) Other Activities & Exhibitions. 2008 Art Dubai (Madinat Jumeirah Dubai UA) BlueDot ASIA (Seoul Art Center,Seoul) SOAP(COEX.Seoul) UP TO THE MINUTE(Korea Art Gallery) Art . joy (Insa Art Center,.Seoul) 2007 Singapore Art Fair (Singapore) Rainbow(Gasan Gallery,Seoul) NO BOUNDS (Gallery SUN Contemporary,Seoul) RED & BLUE (Insa Art Center,.Seoul) 2006 Singapore Art Fair (Singapore) Seoui Art Fair (Seoul Art Center,Seoul) The glory of fall color Exhibition (Gallery H ,Seoul) Lovely Edition (INSA ART Center,Seoul) The Scent of Korea (Daegu Culture & Arts Center) 2005 Travelling Art Museun (Organized by Nation Museum of ContemporaryArt,Touring Exhibition) In an aspirin (Seo Ho Gallery, Seoul) 2004 Art Seoul (Seoul Arts Center, Seoul) Travelling Art Museun (Organized by Nation Museum of Contemporary Art, Touring Exhibition) In an aspirin (Indeco Gallery, Seoul) Art for Health (Star Tower Gallery, Seoul) 2002 Jinju Triennaie 2000 Establishment Exhibition (Jinju Art Center) Rising Consciousness (Chohyung Gallery, Seoul) Paintings with Poems (Seoul Gallery, Seoul) 2001 Dan Exhibition (Kwanhoo Art Hall, Seoul) Korean and Japanese Young Artists Exchange Exhibition (Korean Embassy Korea Art Culture Foundation,Tokyo) 2000 First Exhibition for Exchange of Young Korean and Japanese Artists (Japanese Cultural Center in Korea, Tokyo) Exhibition for 200th Anniversary of Jinju Triannale (Jinju Cultural Center) Exhibition of Conscious Conception (Chohyung Gallery, Seoul) Exhibition with Poems (Seoul Gallery, Press Center) 1999 Invited Exhibition for Modern Artists of Korea and US (Chohyung Gallery, Seoul) Invited Exhibition hosted by MILLENIUM OF MILLENIUM (Chohyung Gallery, Seoul) Gallery’s Art Festival (Chohyung Gallery, Seoul) Frist Exhibition for Exchange of Young Korean and Japanese Artists (Japanese Cultural Center in Korea, Seoul) 1997 Yearim Exhibition (Gallery-17, Tokyo) 1996 Exhibition for Scholarship Students of Ashahi Culture and Art Foundation Second Exhibition for Foreign Students (Sumida Riverside Hall, Tokyo) 1995 Irregular Exhibition (Kyubi Gallery, Tokyo Ginza) 95Hiroshima International Art Festival (Hiroshima International Convention) Exhibition for Scholarship Students of Satoou International Art Foundation (Satoou Art Museum, Tokyo) 1994 Exhibition of Vidual Expansion (Arario Gallery) Exhibition of Consciousness of en plein air (Nichido Gallery, Karuijawha) Exhibition of Synergistic Effect (Exhibit Room at ToKyo National University of Fine Arts and Music) Exhibition for Asian Students (Yoshii Gallery, Tokyo Ginza) First Exhibition for Foreign Students (Sumida Riverside Hall, Tokyo) 1993 Exhibition of Modern Days’ Art of Korea and Japan (The Korean Culture and Arts Foundation) 1992 Exhibition of Vidual Expansion (Arario Gallery) ‘92Exhibition for Best Artists (Hong Gallery, Seoul) 1990 Choonnam Artists’ Exhibition (Chunahn Residents’ Center) 1989 Contest of New Arts (Design Wrapping Center, Seoul) Contest of Traditional Arts (Sejong Center for the Performing Arts) Award -Awards in the first and second Exhibition for Foreign Students, and in Hiroshima International Art Festival -Winning numerous other awards Scholarship from Asahi Culture & Arts Foundation Scholarship from Satoou International Art Promotion Foundation Major Works in Ownership of Others.
