Three thousand Court Ladies
As the main piece of the 3,000 Court Ladies series, it is based on the picture of the Geonjeongjeon Hall in the Gyeongbok Palace, photographed by Japan in the early 1900s. It was taken at the rooftop of the Japanese General Government Building, which no longer exists. Two hundred and fifty court maids with different faces and poses are dancing. According to the historical data, in the Joseon Dynasty, there were approximately 250 court ladies who resided in the Gyeongbok Palace holding various degrees of ranks. I created a paradise by putting peach blossom trees over the temporary buildings substituting the damaged part of the palace on the left and rear side. I spent almost three months only for digital work due to the trial and errors in the early phase as well as the process of fabricating each character of court ladies. Within this process, I felt the piece evolved. Based on a model wearing Hanbok, Korean traditional costume, I created diverse faces of the most beautiful women in the world. I collected facial images of duchess and countess from History of Beauty by Umberto Eco, fairies of the myths, movie stars, cartoon heroines, and sexy game characters, and selected those only with the best visual appearance. I also put a fox from a fairy tale. Downloading these digital images, I struggled with computer viruses, which reminds me of a lifelong journey acknowledging, conflicting, and balancing with invisible things. The characters I made are dancing to the sound from the gramophone, with their space helmets, solar panels, and antennae on, trying to communicate with the place where their beloved one is, where the king who left his perished country is. It is a ceremony dedicated to the forgotten dynasty.
