Lee Gil Woo combines traditional material and subject matter with contemporary touch, developing them into his unique style of portrait and landscape paintings. He burns numerous small holes on thin Korean paper with an incense stick before he paints specific images on it. Then, he puts two separate paper together, one on top of the other, but slightly out of line. As the burning of incense means purification in traditional ancestral rites in Korea, he carries out his own ritual with sincerity and patience. His works are acclaimed as ‘extraordinary pieces which never seen in the existing Korean paintings’ for his both experimental painting technique and subject matter -the encounter of the Eastern and Western cultures and the communication of traditional and modernity. In his series of ‘Ronal on Tour’ portraying Ronal McDonald strolling untouched nature, far from the mundane world, Lee showed harmony between symbolic icon of America and landscapes in traditional Korean painting. Since then he introduced much diversified artistic world of his by overlapping representative figures of the East and West through works of ‘Irrelevant Answer’ and of ‘Dancer in Nature’. Such reiteration of heterogeneous images creates visual tense and intentionally causes blurring of the individuality of the subject. The artist aims to portray the encounter of the Eastern and Western cultures and its collision as well as the current society’s cosmopolitanism of how various cultures naturally coexist. Lee Gil Woo received his BFA and MFA from Chung-ang University in Seoul, Korea and had exhibited his intriguing paintings in some major cities such as Seoul, Beijing, Shanghai and London. The success of his first show in China in 2005 led to the following year’s solo exhibition at Gallery Moon in Beijing and now he is recognized as one of the most distinguished Korean artists in China. He received great responses from the critics all over the world by his participation in many prestigious art fairs including Dubai Art Fair, ARCO Spain, and Prague Art Biennale. He was awarded a Special Prize at the 19th Korea Grand Art Exhibition by National Museum of Contemporary Art in 2000 and won Grand Prize at the 14th Asian Art Biennale Bangladesh 2010 with his work ‘Dancer in Nature’.
