Alexander Antadze
2013.11.08 - 02.19
Gallery Sun Contemporary is pleased to have Alexander Antadze’s exhibition, ‘Love’, from February 14 to March 3. Antadze captures his thoughts and feelings regarding the constantly changing times on canvas. The artist’s home country, Georgia, which became independent in 1992 with the fall of the Soviet Union, is located south of Russia in the South Caucasus region adjacent to the Black Sea. This exhibition aims to introduce less widely known Georgia’s arts and culture to the Korean public. It consists of 42 works under the theme of life’s positive energy and happiness.
The art world has been gradually shifting its attention from the developed countries in North America and Europe to the smaller countries in South America, South East Asia, and the Caucasus region. During the past years, many New York galleries have been actively exhibiting South East Asian artists’ works, and many of Europe’s major museums have been holding group/solo exhibitions of artists from the Caucasus region - Russia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia. Such initiatives by galleries and museums have shown the world the enormous potential those regions possess. Countries in the Caucasus region had been classified as developing nations due to their economic and political instability. Yet, recently they are dynamically exchanging with foreign countries and are revealing their original and authentic culture to the world. Gallery Sun Contemporary is proud to introduce the less familiar but fascinating art of Georgia to Korea for the first time inviting the Georgian artist Alexander Antadze
Georgia, one of fifteen countries that used to be affiliated to the Soviet Union, prides in having one of the richest cultures. As the Georgian alphabet testifies, the country has shown a distinct cultural identity since its founding in 4th century BC. It is even fair to say that its culture drove Georgia to defend its country despite the numerous foreign attacks. In addition, its capital T’bilisi, located on the path between Europe and Asia, functioned as the bridge to connect the East and the West. Therefore, Georgia’s culture, being formed in a place where multiple cultures coexists, has a unique appeal no other European country’s culture has.
Alexander Antadze has been greatly influenced by his motherland’s culture. In this exhibition, he portrays the various animals one encounters in T’bilisi’s natural environment. His works’ subjects painted in diverse colors demonstrate happiness with their cheerful faces. However, merriment is something rather quite distant from the artist’s actual life because it is difficult to find such pleasure in a country where constant social disruptions and conflicts with its bordering nations exist. Such phenomenon is a problem that not only Georgia faces, but also one the entire international community confronts. Against this pressing problem, Antadze feels both skepticism and vocation as an artist. In his works, he tries to focus on the small joys and amusements that exist amongst the numerous conflicts and struggles. The artist’s attempt in finding happiness in the midst of extreme circumstances is not his way of denying and escaping from the situation, but his way of hoping to share even the smallest joy.
The cow that smiles with its white teeth blatantly showing, the horse that looks into the viewers with its big circular eyes, and the two dogs that bursts into laughter after seeing something hilarious … The animals in Antadze’s works do not display the caution and hostility as in real life but simply show pure happiness. On the second floor, the little black birds painted on various backgrounds appear as small dots from afar but gradually reveal themselves to be full of expressions as the viewer approaches the paintings. These animal caricature paintings hope to convey joy to the viewers by reflecting upon humans’ positive attitude to life. Antadze, who refers to his own works as “paintings that love you,” hopes to comfort those exhausted from the rough reality by painting art that loves the people rather than art that would supposedly be loved.
Alexander Antadze, born in 1972, studied fine arts at Georgia’s T’bilisi State Academy of Arts. The artist held his first solo exhibition in London in 2003, and for the past ten years, has been gradually building his profile mainly in Europe by showing in England, France, Switzerland, Netherland, Russia, and Georgia.
