I think that memories are fluid and are heavily dependent on the current enviroment and circumstances of the person remembering. I believe that these stories, which dicate how a person perceives the world and behaves within it, change with time
Two people who experience the same thing at the same time will remember it differently. Although the same photons of light and moving air particles of sound come to them they will interpret it differently, associate with different experiences and file it differently in their memories. The memory will be edited consciously and unconsciously.
I think what makes people unique is the set of stories which they have to interpret their past and they are the reference points used to interpret the present and the future.
In my opinion freedom from the constraints of conventions of ways of remembering entails a far greater overall freedom. Some of these conventions are the same used to interpret a society's history. An Enlightenment interpretation that would envisage society moving steadily towards individual happiness and liberty could also interpret marriage then children and grandchildren as logical steps towards fulfillment.
However, I believe that the creation of stories is not only an innate human drive, but also a vehicle for the freeing of personal memory.
I chose the Fiary Tale as the vernacular to explore these ideas of memory and truth in the formation of an individual. In order for my stories to ring true, I based them upon my own experiences. This also gave me the opportunity to explore the process of the interpretation of memory.
My memories, which I have used as a source in my work, have changed with time. The idea of truth is less interesting to me than the relationship between individual, memoru and experience.
The Fairy Tales from my youth, and I believe, most other people's youths were not the originals. I understand why it was useful to tell me, as a child, that there are always happy endings and that everyone gets their comeuppance, but this is not true to the Fairy Tale. The interpretations I was given focused upon the saccharine fantastical and edited out the grotesque.
I am attracted to these two contradictory and unrealistic aspects of fairy tales. These two elements, one that is beautiful and lovely and the other, creepy and macabre, co-exist in one simultaneously showing the dual and paradoxical sides. I have created narratives weaving my personal experience with traditions of fairy tales and modern interpretations of fairy tales, using the languafe of memory and dream. My work occupies a space between consciousness and subconsciousness. My memories, which I have used as a source in my work, have changed with time.
