Artist Jihye Park portrays a human’s psychological state driven by her underlying desire, and the conflicting and contradictory emotion human undergoes using the video format. She combines symbolic elements from fairytales/fables, actual incidents and personal experiences to recreate the essence of ambition and lust dormant in close and friendly relationships.
In addition, the artist creates collages with Victorian scraps, which females from the Victorian Era – a time of limited social interactions – used to decorate journals and photo albums. The images formed by the paper scraps are beautiful yet subversive and lovely yet full of eccentricity. It shows the different types of love and its duplicity, and the cruelty and uncanniness apparent in the alluring and sensational romantic novels of the period. Here, the artist aims to unveil the duality of our society, the bizarre and repulsive side hidden amongst the affluence and glamor.
As represented in her media and collage works, Jihye Park plays with the notion of discrepancies inherent in human psychology and our society. She continuously searches for and uncovers the subtle points of inner greed and abnormalities cloaked under the peaceful and elegant veneer, and portrays this in her works.
The artist received both undergraduate and graduate degrees from Goldsmiths, University of London, and is active in England, India, Italy, France and Germany. In 2012, she participated in the MMCA (Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art) Goyang Residency Program, and in 2013 she won the grand prize at the Joongang Fine Arts Prize and was selected to exhibit at the SongEun ArtCube Exhibition. She is currently participating at the 2016 Busan Biennale Project 2 with a video work.
