Kim, Tae-Gon’s solo exhibition titled ‘Geometric Lyricism’ attempts to present geometric works including installations, photographs and paintings in a sentimental context. Comb-pattern pottery (earthenware with the teeth of a comb design) during the Neolithic Age and the pyramids of ancient Egypt, that are the sources of Geometry, could be defined as the first discoveries showing the conceptualized and abstracted geometric forms after Prehistoric cave painting which depicts the realistic images. The civilized space we’re living could be described as geometric space and tools we’re using is derived from the geometric forms. In this sense, illustrating everyday life with Realism techniques can be regarded as ‘Geometricism’ that means geometries are something very familiar to us.
Since 1997, Kim has been working with photographs, performances, mainly focusing on creating geometric space using threads attempting the space to be turned into art itself as well as drawing the spectator to be a part of the work.
This exhibition explores his recent methodical investigation of having ‘installation inside installation.’ For instance, the burnt classroom 2, the sequence of the burnt classroom 1, is constructed with blackened wooden structure having fluorescent threads in it intending to create humanistic, realistic and poetic space. Paintings and photographs likewise embody the geometries in flatten space. Kim’s work, based on geometrical approach, doesn’t try to be something practical but a piece of art to be contemplated. Using symbols and signs, Kim makes us able to associate with what the work says, seeking his work to be seen as a sentimental being to be appreciated.
