Anxiety, expectation people generally have when they start over a new life in a new place, and experience as a stranger in an unfamiliar environment make us, human beings to consider the relationship between one’s own identity and his/her surroundings. Besides, trapping between two desires- to belong to the new world, or to escape from it- those uncomfortable feelings allow us to take some time to look into ourselves. Korean- born artist Jin Kim was a foreigner himself while his stay in London and reflects vivid memories of being a stranger on his canvas with his unique technique coming from his artistic sensitivity and formative ideas. Reading the artist-like figure standing blankly in the middle of a British style study room or a well-kept garden is a key to understand what Kim wants to convey through his paintings: the relation of oneself and its surrounding space. The tension flowing between the space which represents a new environment and the standing figure that neither belongs in nor is separated from the space suggests confused identity of his own as a man of experience who has struggled to adjust to new surroundings.
His bold lines and distinctive brush strokes reveal mysterious tension between the room and the figure by dividing or connecting them. Those bold strokes, particularly the black sharp marks over a canvas are one of the most important formative elements to appreciate his work well. They are pictorial correspondence of cracks on old window frames that the artist used to observe in aged houses in London thus lines themselves create another window on surface. Considering structure of most British houses gives a high visibility to pedestrians, Kim could glimpse the exotic interiors and found himself inharmonious with it. Such experience and feelings are effectively delivered by those bold lines better than by the actual window images on the canvas. Through open and/or closed imaginary window, the figure becomes a part of inner space but at the same time he is in the separate place, outside and this vague boundary between indoor and the man indicates Kim’s insecure state. Further, viewers face another window frame which is a huge canvas itself that covered with bold lines and witness another new space where man locates within the setting.
This new window hanging on the actual wall, the gallery is now a part of the artwork. Just like Jack’s beans growing up to the sky in an instant without noticing, viewers too are already physically and emotionally involve with the painting through numerous visual layers even before they realize they do. Gallery visitors get onboard the time-machine created by the artist and travel back to the street where Kim glimpsed the inside of houses. Since unseen images evoke more curiosity and imagination, viewers identify themselves as the artist or the figure in the painting by trying to figure out what blurry images hidden under multiple layers and experience what he went through at that time and in that place. In that manner, Kim’s very personal experience generalizes and further guides viewers to the state where they can meditate on human nature and identity.
Without any dramatic changes on the subject and formative principles, Kim’s new paintings at Gallery SUN Contemporary focus on the rich palette, spacious inner space and the figurative structure. It adds much stronger narratives on his paintings thus tell more abundant stories of the artist to viewers.
Jin Kim received his BFA and MFA degree at Chung-Ang University and studied Fine Arts at Chelsea College of Art and Design.
