Gallery SUN Contemporary is pleased to present Kim So Yeon’s 2nd solo exhibition, Possession is an alienating illusion from October 7, 2010. Graduating from Kookmin University, Seoul, Kim So Yeon has participated in numerous group exhibitions where she has shown works inspired by mostly children. The artist had long been interested in art therapy and in children who suffer loneliness and isolation, later developing autism and regressive behaviors. In order to communicate these problems to audience, she has continued to work with the theme of children.
This solo show is also in line with the past works of children suffering from negligence and mental disorders, however, with the theme Possession is an alienating illusion, the artist embraces a wider scope of audience by expressing the immaturity and instability that exist in any one of us. Through new works Kim has extended her study of neglected children and their psychology into a more general study and observation of human nature. The common subject of children remains but the change can be traced from children’s mode of action and attitude. The children in recent works are more actively engaging themselves in an object/desire as opposed to being defensive and passive in the past. While, the unstable children do not realize that their obsession for achievement and possession is destroying the object represented as fish. The children/assaulter fail to possess anything in the end to become the victims of illusion; the illusion which possession would save them from isolation but on the contrary, comes down to not possessing anything at all and alienation.
“In an attempt to catch fish, the child waits on barren land, allures them with candy. The child takes fish around with him as balloons and plants them in pots to make them grow only to find them die. The child becomes lonely all over again.” –from artist’s note
In other words, the artist does not want to portray the children in her works as assaulters to blame but reminds us that they are none different from any one of us that are unstable and imperfect and for us to communicate with this unstable sides in ourselves. And the audience is given chance to communicate with the other side inside themselves, with others and the world around them that were once shut out from themselves by self protective instincts imposed upon them by again, themselves.
Kim So Yeon speaks of the imperfectness of human nature, the obsessive nature of wanting to possess to relieve of one’s instability and sense of being deprived, yet she has not given up on people or hope to heal them. Be it dark or light, the artist does not overlook the human nature and let audience face and realize they’re caught in a illusionary cycle of possession and alienation.
