On a personal note, the art gallery is an important space where different feelings crisscross. In the process of painting and presenting its outcome, the space known as the ‘gallery’ is deeply connected with my work. In this exhibition, I tried to reveal the duality of painting, a recurring motif that is shown in my previous works, by revealing the interior and the exterior of gallery. The gallery space is a simple cube which consists of plain and smooth surfaces. Its flat white wall is suitable to display paintings, calls for viewers’ concentration, and is effective in appreciating paintings. In addition to the aforementioned practical aspects, the gallery space seems to possess certain power. This space endows artistic status to an object that fills its emptiness thereby turning the object into a ‘work of art’ and this ‘work of art’ transforms the gallery into a space of flexibility by filling the empty white cube of the latter. Though the gallery space cannot be complete by itself, it not only has, as long as it houses any object, the power to transform itself into an artistic space but also the ability to turn even the viewers of object in the gallery into a work of art. Thus, it has the power to portray any object as a work of art. Gallery is a space where invisible activities such as satire, struggle, adaptability, irony, manipulation, and fraud actively take place. It is also a space where hierarchy is created along with power struggle. Gallery walls mean more than white walls as they make up a costly professional space. Likewise, a ‘painting’ means more than a cluster of paints on a canvas.
The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao which appears in this exhibition creates splendid, grandiose, and impressive images with its architecture alone. Though it is an artificially-made structure, its winding body resembles an organic form. As soon as you step inside Tate Modern, you become so overwhelmed by the building space that just being inside the building is enough to leave a strong impression in you. Along with the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Tate Modern has become a landmark building and its building alone is recognized as a work of art. Trees and plants that overlap with the building represents nature cultivated in an artificial space namely a garden rather than natural scenery. Both the interior and the exterior of gallery, heart, road, swimming pool, and gallery space are overlapped or juxtaposed on canvas. The perspective composition draws your attention to the work but at a certain moment, the vanishing point is squashed by a squeegee, and the traces of sprayed paints disturb the perspective composition thereby creating an effect of flatness which emphasizes the material aspect of paints. Inner space is connected to the exterior. The paint that dribbles down on the surface of building becomes rain. The traces of red paint representing heart describe my bodily movement while a lump of red meat is a slightly strange object that does not fit well with graceful white walls of gallery. My painting houses the gallery and the gallery houses my paintings. Painting is situated in an endless conflict between three dimensions and a plane. Gaze move to and fro the inside and the outside of canvas and I ceaselessly interact with the outside. The spectacle presented by the exterior of gallery when combined with stories that derive from the interior of gallery expands our emotion.
